The Tannot Mata Temple in Jaisalmer is situated very close to the border with Pakistan. Tourists cannot go beyond this temple to see the Indo-Pak border. The region is believed to be very rich in oil and gas reserves.
Interestingly, during the Indo-Pak War in 1965, Pakistan had dropped a number of bombs on the temple to destroy it. However, none of the bombs fell on the temple and the ones that fell near the temple did not explode. The unexploded bombs are now on display in the museum at the Tannot Mata Temple. Post the war, the temple management was handed over to the Border Security Force.
The temple can be reachehtd in two hours from Jaisalmer. The shooting of the movie Border was held in this region. The area is highly prone to attacks and the armies of both governments have placed landmines in this region. The usual victims of these landmines are cattle who stray into the area.
